Staff Profile: Rabbi David M. Weis

Totshabbat2014Rabbi David M. Weis

Whether he’s ‘davening’ with congregants at the Western Wall, delivering a mesmerizing sermon on a topical issue, or welcoming the youngest member of the congregation in his arms on the bimah, Rabbi Weis brings a meaningful spirituality to the occasion. He has been the rabbi here since 1988, serving generations of families as an extension of his own.

Trained at the Hebrew Union College, Rabbi Weis was ordained in 1983. He holds a B.A. degree from the University of California at Berkeley, and a Master of Arts in Hebrew Letters from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, California School. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of his ordination, Rabbi Weis received his Doctor of Divinity degree, by the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.

A lifelong learner and scholar, Rabbi Weis continues his studies each year by attending the Shalom Hartman Institute’s Rabbinic Torah Study Seminar in Israel, and has achieved the academic honor of Senior Rabbinic Fellow of the Institute. He speaks in communities throughout the United States and has published essays and articles on a broad array of Jewish topics. He is an Adjunct Professor at Stockton University, a member of the Mainland Clergy Fellowship, and Past President of the South Jersey Board of Rabbis and Cantors.

Rabbi Weis also is active in interfaith education and dialogue. He teaches classes in Judaism at area churches, leads a Seder of education at a local church each year, and is often invited to speak from the pulpits of area churches. Among his many honors is his induction into the prestigious Chapel of the Four Chaplains for his work in interfaith education and cooperation.

In addition to his Congregational family, Rabbi’s own children have grown up at Beth Israel.
Rabbi Weis is married to noted Judaic artist and educator Susan Fischer Weis, who is the Executive Director of the Board of Jewish Education (BJE) as well as leader of our youth groups. They have three children, Joshua, Leah and Rebecca.
